MonGOOS Workshop 2016

2016 MonGOOS Workshop

November 15th. Split, Croatia

Advances in Oceanographic Modelling in the Mediterranean Sea

Download Workshop Brochure

Operational modelling is now a mature activity in the Mediterranean and Black Sea involving dozen of teams and  more than 30 routinely modelling products. In this framework, a scientific workshop on recent progress and strategies on ocean and coastal modelling was proposed in order to:

  • Review of existing capacities on Mediterranean Circulation Modelling and perspectives.
  • Evaluation of the down-scaling strategies (off line zooms, 2 way-zooms, up-scaling, unstructured grids...).
  • Recent or on-going developments in key  processes: (sub)mesoscale structures, convection, ocean-waves-atmosphere interactions, straits dynamics.
  • Progress biochemical and environmental modelling.
  • Strategies of validation.

The workshop was divided in two thematic sessions:

1. Review of existing operational systems: the presentations will be focused in describing the existing systems of the region, with  their capabilities, limitations, detected problems and success histories

2.Simulation of processes and technical advances in numerical modelling in the region.

A collective review paper on the existing operational modelling and, recent progress in the Mediterranean region will be proposed for publication in the framework of EuroGOOS, after this meeting.

Participations of teams not involved in operational oceanography are welcome.

The workshop was leaded by MonGOOS modelling working group and it took place the day preceding 2016 MonGOOS Annual Assembly at Cornaro Hotel in Split, Croatia on November 15th. The event was hosted by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.
